Talk About Safe Driving With Your Teen

While becoming a licensed driver is a fun time for teens, having a teen driver can be a scary time for parents. Especially when vehicular fatalities are one of the leading causes of death for many teenagers. It’s helpful to know that they are being as safe as possible while on the road. In order to ease your mind some, here are some tips to talk about with your teen:

  • Obey the speed limit and posted road signs. Speeding is dangerous, especially for an inexperienced driver. Drive the speed limit and no running stop lights or signs.
  • Slow down or pull over in inclement weather. If it starts pouring down raining while your teen is driving, let them know they have to slow down and it’s fine to pull over if they don’t feel comfortable driving.
  • Don’t drink and drive. Driving under the influence is dangerous and against the law. You should thoroughly explain the consequences of drunk driving with your teen.
  • Put the cellphone away. Text or call friends once you reach your destination. Distracted driving is a leading cause of car accidents.
